What Is Coating Weight?

Coating Weight

Coating weight refers to the mass of zinc applied to the steel surface during the galvanizing process. It indicates the thickness and durability of the zinc layer, which impacts the steel's corrosion resistance, lifespan, and performance in differing environments.

A higher coating weight generally means stronger protection against rust and a longer service life. In practice, coating weights are often specified using designations like G30, G60, or G90, which correspond to the amount of zinc in grams applied per square meter of steel. G30 is generally used for indoor applications, while G90 or higher is used for exterior applications for added protection.
